Overview (May 2026)

Two conversational assistants, two strategies

ChatGPT (OpenAI, USA) leads the consumer market and holds the lead on coding benchmarks. Le Chat (Mistral, France) bets on Cerebras speed, price, European compliance, and open weights. This comparison cites the official pricing pages and published benchmarks.

Le Chat (Mistral)

Speed, price, European sovereignty

Flash Answers at about 1,100 tokens per second on Cerebras WSE-3 (source: Cerebras blog, February 2025). Pro at $14.99/month, student tier at $6.99. French company outside US CLOUD Act jurisdiction. Several models shipped as open weights (Mistral Medium 3.5, Small 4, Codestral) under Apache 2.0.

Strong for: regulated EU workflows, on-prem or private-VPC deployment on Enterprise, French- and German-speaking teams.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Ecosystem, agentic coding, advanced voice

Plus at $20/month, Pro at $100 or $200 (5x / 20x Plus limits, launched April 2026). GPT-5.5 (released April 23, 2026) leads SWE-bench Verified at 88.7%. Primary hosting in the US (CLOUD Act applies). Widest catalog of custom GPTs in the Store.

Strong for: complex agentic coding, Realtime voice, GPT-Image generation, plugin ecosystem. Note: Sora was discontinued April 26, 2026; Sora 2 capabilities are folded into ChatGPT Plus and Pro.

Performance

Response speed

Flash Answers at 1,100 tok/s, no OpenAI equivalent.

Mistral and Cerebras co-developed speculative decoding and reach about 1,100 tokens per second on Le Chat (Cerebras blog, February 2025). GPT-5.5 runs around 80-180 tok/s depending on reasoning mode (Artificial Analysis, llm-stats). The gap is most visible on long replies, code, and translations.

Sovereignty

Compliance and data

Mistral is French; ChatGPT falls under US jurisdiction.

Mistral holds SOC 2 Type II; ISO 27001 in progress (October 2025). EU data residency on Enterprise, plus on-prem or private-VPC deployment. OpenAI offers regional residency (US, EU, UK, JP) on Enterprise but remains under the CLOUD Act. Important: Le Chat's consumer tiers may reuse chats for training by default. Check the toggle in privacy settings before handling sensitive data.

Ecosystem

Connectors and plugins

Open MCP vs closed GPT Store: two logics.

Le Chat speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard published by Anthropic and adopted by Mistral, Cursor, and others. 22 official connectors (GitHub, Snowflake, Databricks, Atlassian, Stripe, etc.) available even on Free. ChatGPT offers GPT Actions and a closed Store with hundreds of thousands of custom GPTs (exact count unpublished in 2026). To wire up internal systems, MCP is faster to set up.

Benchmarks

Coding and agents

GPT-5.5 leads SWE-bench Verified by a clear margin.

On SWE-bench Verified, GPT-5.5 measures at 88.7% (BenchLM, TokenMix). Mistral Medium 3.5 hits 77.6% (official Mistral announcement, May 2, 2026). Mistral Large 3 has not published an official SWE-bench score. LiveCodeBench v6: Mistral Large 3 around 82.8% (Vals AI). Cursor, Cline, and Claude Code default to Claude or GPT, not Mistral.

Availability

Open models

Mistral ships weights, OpenAI does not.

Mistral Medium 3.5 (128B, May 2026), Mistral Small 4 (119B MoE / 6B active, March 2026), Codestral, Pixtral Large, and several others are distributed under Apache 2.0. Companies can self-host them. ChatGPT and the GPT-5 family remain proprietary, accessible only through the OpenAI API.

When Le Chat wins

Four concrete cases where Le Chat is the better choice in 2026

Both tools are good. Here are the contexts where Le Chat clearly comes out ahead.

You operate under EU regulation

Hospitals, banks, public sector, legal: Mistral is French, offers EU data residency on Enterprise, and an on-prem deployment option. ChatGPT stays SaaS-only and remains under the CLOUD Act even with residency.

Fast everyday chat matters more than complex code

Flash Answers at 1,100 tok/s gives a UX that does not exist elsewhere. For brainstorming, translation, marketing copy, and rapid iteration, Le Chat feels near real-time.

You want to pay less without losing features

Pro at $14.99 gets you all Mistral models, Memories, Canvas, Deep Research, and 22 connectors. ChatGPT Plus is $20 (25% more expensive). Student Pro at $6.99, no OpenAI equivalent.

You deploy on internal infrastructure

Mistral Medium 3.5 (128B), Small 4, Codestral, Pixtral are released under Apache 2.0. You can self-host them. OpenAI offers no self-host option.

How to test in under an hour

Three prompts to run side by side

The serious approach: same prompt, same context, compare rendering, speed, quality.

Test 1: long streamed reply

  • Ask for a detailed 1,500-word summary on a topic you know well.
  • Time the seconds until the last token on both products.
  • Verify factual accuracy and structure (headings, lists, citations).
  • Flash Answers shines here.

Test 2: real coding task

  • Drop in a 200-400 line source file and ask for a refactor with specific constraints.
  • Measure: which model understands intent, which introduces regressions.
  • GPT-5.5 stays ahead on multi-file agentic tasks.
  • For short code, Mistral Codestral is competitive.

Test 3: multi-source research

  • Enable Deep Research in Le Chat (Pro / Team) and the equivalent in ChatGPT.
  • Give an open topic: market analysis, regulation, technology comparison.
  • Compare: depth, clickable citations, coverage of European sources.
  • Le Chat Deep Research covers French and German sources better.

When ChatGPT wins

Four situations where ChatGPT remains the right choice

Be honest about the areas where OpenAI keeps the technical lead as of May 2026.

Complex multi-file agentic coding

GPT-5.5 hits 88.7% on SWE-bench Verified (BenchLM). Mistral Medium 3.5 is at 77.6%. Cursor, Cline, Claude Code, and Windsurf default to GPT-5.5 or Claude, not Mistral.

Advanced voice and multimodal

Advanced Voice Mode (still GPT-4o-audio backed in late 2025) remains more natural than Voxtral on the consumer side. GPT-Image generation, Whisper transcription, native multimodal integration.

Custom GPT ecosystem and plugins

The GPT Store launched in January 2024 contains hundreds of thousands of custom GPTs. More third-party plugins, more native integrations, more tutorials, and a larger user community.

Computer Use and desktop automation

GPT-5.4 introduced a native Computer Use API (75% OSWorld). Mistral has no equivalent as of May 2026. For desktop automation flows, ChatGPT is ahead.

Caveats before you switch

Three things consumer comparisons miss

Important nuances to keep in mind.

Mistral Large 3 has not published its SWE-bench Verified score

  • The official SWE-bench score is for Mistral Medium 3.5 (77.6%, announced May 2, 2026).
  • If a site publishes a SWE-bench number for Large 3, it is unsourced.
  • To compare agentic coding, use LiveCodeBench (Large 3 ~82.8%) or run your own test.

Cerebras 10x was measured in February 2025

  • The 1,100 tok/s figure on Le Chat is reproducible and confirmed by Cerebras.
  • The 10x multiplier compares against GPT-4o, not GPT-5.5 which is faster.
  • The speed advantage is real but the exact multiplier in 2026 should be hedged.

Sora is no longer a ChatGPT differentiator

  • Sora web and app were discontinued April 26, 2026 (OpenAI Help Center).
  • Sora 2 capabilities are now folded into ChatGPT Plus / Pro.
  • The Sora API sunsets September 24, 2026.
  • Any comparison citing Sora as an independent advantage is outdated.
